How IMU Inspired My Path in Medical Biotechnology

When I was deciding where to pursue my degree, IMU stood out for its strong reputation in the medical and health sciences field. What attracted me most was its hands-on learning approach, where theory and practical applications are closely integrated. I wanted to study in an environment that would challenge me to think critically and prepare me for real-world research, not just memorise facts for exams.

IMU’s focus on biotechnology in a medical context also appealed to me — it wasn’t just about science, but about how science can make a difference in human health and sustainability. The university’s modern facilities, supportive lecturers, and emphasis on innovation made it the perfect choice for my academic journey.

My time at IMU was both fun and challenging. The coursework was intense, but it pushed me to grow intellectually and personally. I remember early morning study sessions with friends, late-night revisions throughout the night, laughter in the lab when experiments didn’t go as planned, and the small victories when the results finally worked out.

Beyond academics, IMU offered a vibrant student community that made campus life truly enjoyable. Whether it was group projects, research discussions, or casual chats at the cafeteria, every moment taught me teamwork, patience, and perseverance.

I’m currently working as a Research Scientist at COE Cell AgriTech, a company involved in cultivated meat and cell-based innovation. My role allows me to apply everything I learned from my Medical Biotechnology degree — from cell culture techniques and aseptic handling to data analysis and experimental design.

The transition from IMU’s laboratory benches to an industrial research lab felt natural because IMU prepared me well for a career that blends biology, technology, and sustainability. I joined COE Cell AgriTech because I wanted to be part of something meaningful, which is creating sustainable solutions for the future of food and health.

Honestly, the future still feels like an open canvas. I’m exploring the idea of furthering my studies in biotechnology, possibly pursuing a master’s degree. I’m also interested in contributing to research that bridges biotechnology and sustainable food production, or perhaps moving into R&D management in the long term.

Whatever direction I take, I know I want to keep learning, innovating, and contributing to fields that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

If you’re planning to work in a lab, my biggest advice is to master your lab skills. Being technically competent can set you apart in the industry. Learn how to handle samples, operate instruments confidently, and understand why each step matters.

At the same time, don’t neglect soft skills. Communication, teamwork, and critical thinking are just as important as technical knowledge. Most of all, stay curious. Biotechnology is a field that evolves quickly, and curiosity keeps you adaptable and motivated.

Skills are truly what people in the industry look for, along with the ability to solve sudden problems effectively.

Studying at IMU wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about discovering my passion for science and sustainability. The lessons I learned, both inside and outside the lab, continue to guide me in my professional journey.

From being a curious student to a scientist working to “meat” the future, IMU gave me the foundation to turn my passion into purpose.
